In the first decades of the 19th century, jewellery made of cut coral became very fashionable. At least one extended trip to Italy in a lifetime was still part of the good manners of the time and it was not uncommon for travellers to bring coral jewellery back home, north of the Alps. For what made coral so attractive in those years was that it could be worn at all times of day and on all occasions - unlike diamonds, for example, which were socially considered appropriate only in the evening and for married women. Thus, as souvenirs of a sojourn at the foot of Vesuvius, people acquired coral, as polished spheres for necklaces and bracelets, or as cut cameos with mythological motifs. Our unusual bracelet presents a particularly beautiful sculpted cameo with the bust of an ancient ruler. Skilfully carved from deep red Mediterranean coral, a gold setting holds the effigy with tiny gold beads. The bracelet itself is composed of six rows of the finest Mediterranean coral, cut into round beads and re-stringed. The design of the setting and its stamping allow us to date the goldsmith's work to around 1820 and locate it to Italy. Obviously the corals of the bracelet were renewed once in later times, because round beads are rather unusual in those years. Presumably they were renewed in the 20th century. Comparable pieces can be found in Brigittte Marquardt: Schmuck. Classicism and Biedermeier 1780 - 1850, Munich 1983, p. 203 a.o.
