Description
The present bracelet takes us to a summer almost a century and a half ago. "NEAPEL / 15.8.1879" is engraved in the shiny gold of the clasp. Naples, with its gorgeous location on the Mediterranean Sea, was the seat of cameo cutters and coral carvers in the 19th century. Business flourished, as it was a must for wealthy travellers in the 19th century to purchase fine jewellery souvenirs on their long-awaited trip to Italy. These were also intended to remind them back home of Italy's rich artistic treasures. The engraving shows that it was travellers who made the journey to "Neapel": for only in German does Naples bear this name. The hallmark on the clasp is even more revealing, as it bears the hallmark "C", the city mark for Prague, then part of the KuK monarchy of Austria-Hungary. The travellers were apparently at home there and, upon their return, had the clasp made for the bracelet. Unlike the gilded silver setting of the coral, the clasp is made of solid gold, which is also explained by its later origin. But the piece of jewellery tells us even more: the centerpiece, a plastic coral flower, bears the Austro-Hungarian import hallmark, the so-called foreign traffic hallmark, and is marked with a "B" for Linz. The original purchasers of the bracelet, made in Naples, entered the KuK monarchy via Linz, as it was on their way to Prague. Upon entry, they then declared the jewellery, at that time without a gold clasp, and it was hallmarked. To this day, the jewellery has been preserved first class and in wearable condition. A tangible piece of history!
