Symphony of the big city
Antique cufflinks with white enamel on gold, Wilhelm Müller, Berlin around 1920
Berlin in the days of the Weimar Republic: Imagine a busy street where the new trams squeak along their metal rails. Elegantly guarded gentlemen stride quickly past under the window displays, and now and then a lady approaches in clacking heels, fashionably dressed in a calf-length suit and her hair cut short. On quieter days, the strollers hear the babbling of the Spree Canal. Here, at the Gertraudenbrücke, lies an imposing neo-Gothic house, behind which a church tower stretches into the blue sky and chimes on the hour. The impressive house is the headquarters of the jewellery dealer who had it built: Wilhelm Müller, a company known beyond the borders of Berlin, sells fine goods in the latest style of their time from Gertraudenstraße. The cufflinks presented here also bear Wilhelm Müller's company mark. Their simple-elegant basic form and reduced surface finish speak the formal language of the beginning Art Déco. White enamel with fan-like recesses frames the golden fronts, which shimmer silk-matt due to their structuring. We were able to discover the noble pair on site in Berlin - it seems to have lived through the madness and turmoil of the turbulent 20th century here in the capital. It is beautifully preserved and comes in an antique box from a Berlin jeweler who ran his business just a 15-minute walk from the Jewel Palace. I wonder if the first buyer of the cufflinks in the 1920s lived in Berlin Mitte and frequented both jeweler's shops?
