Between the Nile and the Thames
Antique necklace with peridots in gold, Great Britain circa 1900
In the late years of the Victorian reign, the British rediscovered an ancient place steeped in legend: St. John's Island in the Red Sea off Egypt, where peridots had been recovered since ancient times until it was forgotten and then finally rediscovered. Since the British took over the rule of the country on the Nile from 1882 onwards, the gemstones of Egypt found their way into the British jewellery of those years. The peridot played a special role here, because according to legend, the green stone is considered the favorite stone of the last pharaoh Cleopatra. With the resumption of peridot mining on St. John's Island, a great fashion began which brought peridot into the focus of elegant jewelry designs. For so sought after and yet so rare had been peridots before that particularly large and beautiful specimens had long been taken from old pieces of jewellery to be reworked (cf. Arthur Herbert Church: Precious Stones..., London 1913, p. 109). Now jewellery designers and lovers could devote themselves entirely to this passion for the green gemstone. The present necklace from around 1900 presents ten of these grass-green stones in a design typical of the period. Five decorative elements are attached to a delicate anchor chain. Their floral design reveals the influence of Art Nouveau: One round, as well as one drop-shaped peridot adorn each of these links, giving the necklace an elegant, feminine appearance. The necklace is in very good condition. We discovered it in London.
