In a jewellery frenzy

Antique pendant brooch with amethysts & pearls in gold, around 1900

The amethyst, agate, jasper, citrine and onyx - all these stones fall into the group of quartz. Their colors, however, are quite unique. The amethyst is the purple son of this family. It ranges in color from the deep violet of Siberian amethysts to a delicate, cool, almost pinkish hue known as "Rose de France." Its name is derived from the Greek "amethystos" - "counteracting intoxication" - and expresses the ancient belief that its wearer was immune to the intoxicating effects of wine. In the Middle Ages and even in antiquity, numerous decorative objects such as drinking cups were cut from amethyst, of which a few precious examples have been preserved in museums of decorative art. The present piece of jewellery combines six of these stones with pearls to create a playful design. The amethysts exhibit a deep, "Siberian" color and shine especially brightly next to the white natural pearls. An additional fine gilding on the solid gold lends it an intense golden-yellow, velvety shimmer in which the gemstones are shown off to excellent advantage. Designed in the shape of a rosette of ribbons, this piece of jewellery can be worn as both a brooch and a pendant. Once this double use was quite common, because brooches as well as pendants were worn in the middle, on the collar of the high-necked white blouse. Only the choice of high or low neckline thus decided whether the piece of jewellery adorned its first owner during the day as a brooch or pendant. We discovered it in London, and it was in Great Britain that it was once created.
