In the jewelry frenzy

Edwardian pendant brooch with amethysts & pearls in gold, c. 1910

The amethyst, agate, jasper, citrine and onyx - all these stones fall into the group of quartz. Their colors, however, are quite unique. Amethyst is the purple son of this family. It ranges in color from the deep violet of Siberian amethysts to a delicate, cool, almost pinkish hue known as "Rose de France." Its name derives from the Greek "amethystos" - "counteracting intoxication" - and expresses the ancient belief that its wearer was immune to the intoxicating effects of wine. In the Middle Ages and even in antiquity, amethyst was therefore used to cut numerous decorative objects such as drinking cups, of which a few precious specimens have been preserved in museums of decorative arts. The present piece of jewelry combines nine of these stones with natural pearls to create a serene, light design developed entirely from geometry. The amethysts exhibit wonderful lavender color and shine especially beautifully next to the white natural pearls. An additional fine gold plating on the gold gives it an intense golden velvety shimmer, in which the gemstones are shown off to excellent advantage. The piece of jewelry can be worn as a brooch and pendant. Once this dual use was quite common, because brooches were worn as well as pendants in the center, on the collar of the high-necked white blouse. Only the choice of high or low neckline thus decided whether the piece of jewelry adorned its first owner during the day as a brooch or pendant. We discovered it in London and in Great Britain it was also once created.
