Antique ring with topaz & pearls in gold, Great Britain circa 1815

With its shimmering trimming, the ring presented here transports us to the England of the years around 1815. It was the epoch of the so-called "Regency", when the Prince of Wales Georg August Friedrich von Hannover conducted the affairs of state for his father George III, who was ill with porphyria. It was a time of particular romanticism and sensibility, so aptly portrayed especially by Jane Austen's novels. During this period, the English upper classes favored the life portrayed in many later films on their extensive country estates. The day was devoted to amusements and outdoor sporting activities, while elegant salons dominated social life in the evening. The distinction between day and evening jewellery, with which the English lady took these different requirements into account, also dates from this period. Rings in particular were worn in a wide variety of forms and often in large numbers at the same time, as contemporary paintings attest. Among the most popular gemstones of the era for daytime jewellery, besides garnet, was topaz, as we see in our ring. Always set in closed settings, its yellowish colour was often enhanced by backed silver foils. In the center of the ring here, the oval faceted gemstone, which most likely originated in Brazil. Accompanying the stone with natural pearls is particularly typical of the period. These treasures, both mined in Scottish rivers and imported from the Orient, frame the yellow gemstone and provide it with a delicate white shimmer. The ring is beautifully preserved and is a rare example of such English jewellery of the years around 1815.
