Description
"Stars shining bright above you Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you" Birds singing in the sycamore trees Dream a little dream of me..." A piece of fashion history is this star made of light reddish gold, which can be worn as a brooch. Stars set with pearls or diamonds were popular pieces of jewellery in the second half of the 19th century. But what made the star so exciting for the ladies of that time? On the one hand, stars were an expression of the Oriental enthusiasm of the time, with its fondness for exotic and foreign cultures. On the other hand, the enthusiasm for star motifs was due to the Empress of Austria, who introduced the motif of diamond stars to Viennese society and made them immortal classics of jewellery history to this day. Probably the most famous portrait of Sisi, painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, shows the young empress with a multitude of radiant diamond stars in her dark hair flowing down. Her husband Franz Joseph I had them specially made after Sisi had been delighted by the jewellery of the Night Queen after a visit to the opera of The Magic Flute. An entire suite of diamond stars was thus made by the Viennese court jeweler A. E. Köchert - and the painting made her famous. After this portrait became known, there was no stopping the ladies of Viennese society: every woman who could afford it wanted to come into possession of at least one precious star. The piece of jewellery presented here corresponds to this fashion. Preciously set with five beautiful old-cut diamonds and sixteen finely lustrous oriental pearls, the red gold star shines with a warm glow. The beautiful star came to us from Heidelberg and is beautifully preserved. Its hallmark shows that it was also made in Germany, as 13.5 karat gold was an old German alloy.

Natural pearls have always belonged in the art and wonder chambers of the rulers of Europe. The value of natural pearls compared to cultured pearls is obvious - after all, like natural gemstones, they are small natural wonders. The price of natural pearls in the years around 1900 was about the same as for diamonds of the same size, and pearls for a necklace were usually purchased individually for reasons of cost and collected until a strand was gathered. The magic that comes from natural pearls is hard to put into words, but each natural pearl is different from the other and has its own luster, structure and luster. They are always wonderful unique pieces of nature - which are hard to find today.
