The blue flower

Classic entourage ring with untreated 3.93 ct sapphire & diamonds, circa 1975

I seek the blue flower, I look for it and never find it, I dream that in the flower My good fortune blossom for me. Joseph von Eichendorff (1818) The blue flower was the symbol of longing of German Romanticism. It embodied all that the Romantics were looking for in what seemed to them an overly prosaic and sober world: Depth and overwhelming sensation, a lasting happiness that rewarded the long search. What more beautiful metaphor, then, could there be for an engagement ring than to hold the proverbial blue flower in one's hand with it? The ring that confronts us in the form of such a flower is a so-called entourage ring, from the French word for escort, entourage. Its name describes the way in which diamonds accompany a precious center stone to help it achieve the greatest possible presence. Similar rings have been worn since the 18th century, but it was from the 1960s onwards that the entourage ring once again experienced great popularity. From the 1970s onwards, the stones were often set in yellow gold instead of white gold. The centre stone is a particularly precious specimen, as it is a natural, untreated sapphire of 3.93 ct. Its intense blue color with subtle lilac reflections is entirely natural in origin, and its clarity and transparency have not been enhanced by heat treatments. Like a real flower, it is thus an artful creation of nature, rarely found on the market. The ring is in very good condition. Because of its romantic connotation, it is particularly suitable as an engagement ring: for the sapphire, in the language of jewels, stands for loving fidelity, the diamond for eternity.
