Description
Around the emergence of amber entwined many myths. One of the most beautiful stories comes from the ancient Greeks, who also came amazingly close to the truth with their tale: The Heliades, the daughters of the sun god Helios, it is said, hitched their brother Phaeton to their father's magnificent sun chariot without permission. Phaeton, eager to steer the chariot across the sky, overestimated his powers, however, and came too close to the sun and crashed tragically. After his death, the sisters were turned into poplars out of punishment or pity, as they wept inconsolably for their brother's death. From their golden tears, according to legend, the amber was born. The necklace here consists of old, large and all around faceted amber. The total of 23 large, faceted amber beads up to 4.5 centimeters in diameter and together weighing more than 356 grams came to us loose. The antique amber beads have an irregular shape that still suggests the natural shape of the stones, but at the same time they are faceted all around. Our goldsmiths have restrung the ambers, placing gold-plated silver elements between them. Their color matches the honey tone of the ambers quite beautifully. A modern magnetic clasp makes the necklace uncomplicated to wear. The ambers here are relatively likely to be the treasured possessions of a wealthy family from the Schaumburg region; they actually came to us from this region. Splendid necklaces made of faceted amber belonged to the typical wedding costume in this region. Comparative examples, which allow us to date the amber, can be found in the standard work of Gislind Ritz: Alter bäuerlicher Schmuck, Munich 1978, pp. 73-79.
