Description
"Behold this lovely structure, which I consecrate as a gift to you; Red branches from the depths of the sea Gave the fabric to the row of pearls That, to the jewellery of joyful youth, Where the mermaid's song was heard, The diver wrested from the mighty coral tree From a mighty coral tree!" This poem is from the series "Begleitgedichte zu Gegenständen aus des Goldschmieds edurious Werkstatt" by Jeanette Bramer, which were published in 1910 in the Deutsche Goldschmiede-Zeitschrift (DGZ, No. 15 1910, p. 136). They were intended to be used by the jewelers of the readership to advertise their jewellery. A poem about the coral necklace was, of course, among them, because in the 19th and early 20th centuries it was a common part of the jewellery wardrobe. Coral processing experienced a real flowering in the 19th century. The increasing number of travelers from all over Europe visited Naples, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Jewellery made of coral was a popular souvenir. But also in London, Paris and Berlin, this most beautiful gift of the sea was traded and imported by jewelers: so even those who could not afford the trip, could enjoy Italian coral jewellery. The present necklace was created at the time of the penultimate turn of the century. Each pearl is cut by hand. To the sides the coral beads are slightly flattened, so that they can line up close to each other. We have had the corals re-strung and the clasp renewed as well, so that the necklace is as carefree to wear today as it was over a century ago.
