In the history of jewellery from Germany, Fahrner jewellery from Pforzheim occupies a special place. For Theodor Fahrner and later his successor Gustav Braendle knew how to make artistically convincing designs and quality workmanship the hallmark of their brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings in the epochs of Art Nouveau and Art Deco like hardly any other modern jewellery manufacturer. But even during the period of reconstruction after 1945, Fahrner jewellery remained a household name. At first, the company mainly produced designs that formally continued the old successes. But soon they also produced in Pforzheim in the taste of the new time. The brooch presented here is a beautiful and rare example of this. It is slightly playful, with tendrils and pearls. But the main protagonist, besides the many glittering marcasites, is a theatrical mask with feathers of marcasite roses growing out of its head. The hallmarks on the back of the brooch reveal that it was intended specifically for the foreign market: the fineness is indicated here as "Sterling" and "German" is noted. Since the early years of the company, traveling salesmen with large sample cases had presented the new products developed in Pforzheim to local jewelers every year. One such sample case had lain untouched in an attic for the last 40 years or more until it was offered to us. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, mostly marked with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. The piece of jewellery here comes from this sample case and is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. Jewellery between avant-garde and tradition", edited by Brigitte Leonhardt and Dieter Zühlsdorff, Stuttgart 2005.
