Description
"Less is more!" asserted Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to express the ideals of modernism and the Bauhaus. Robert Venturi, the most famous architect of postmodernism, reformulated this sentence in his own sense a good 60 years later: "Less is a bore", in other words: "Less is boring"! And in this way he expressed not least the sense of style and the will to form of the 1980s in a catchy slogan. The 1980s ring presented here was born of this spirit - and it is a truly impressive piece of jewelry, fully dedicated to ornamentation and the effect of its gemstones. Radiant blue are the three sapphires at the center of the solid rose gold ring that found its way to us here in Berlin. The natural gemstones are accompanied by eight rubies and fourteen diamonds in old cuts, so that the large ring head can accommodate a total of 25 fine gemstones. It is laid out in mirror symmetry and vaguely speaks the formal language of Art Nouveau, which is skilfully adopted here. The curved shapes of the diamond settings and the rubies set like umbels on the long sides of the ring are reminiscent of Art Nouveau works. Its powerful, ornamental shape and workmanship allow us to date the magnificent ring, which easily covers an entire finger limb, to the 1980s. Despite its size, the ring is smoothly crafted, making it comfortable to wear. A wonderful piece of jewelry for ladies who like it to be a little more lavishly designed.

All times have their fashions, and all fashions have their effects also on the field of jewelry. Jewelry of the 1980s is an often beautiful, and always impressive testimony of a time of optimism and abundance: The oil crisis seemed to be over, Wall Street flourished - People sipped cocktails and paid with credit cards, everything seemed possible. At the same time, a new image of women emerged. Self-confident and tough, asserting herself at work, in the face of men, successful, with broad shoulder pads and high heels, she adorned herself with rings, necklaces and brooches in hitherto unusual dimensions, with reflective surfaces of yellow gold and rich trimmings of colored gemstones. A lot of costume jewelry was created, because executed in real materials the jewelry would have been unaffordable for most women, so large and heavy they should appear. But real jewelry was also produced in large numbers in the U.S. and Europe, of course.
