Vintage set in historical shapes by Blachian antique jewellery, around 1960
"Part of the essence of the Baroque, which had its heyday in the 17th century, is the swelling movement of all forms, which powerfully and vividly urge to merge into one another. The Baroque curlicues lend the decoration a special plasticity and lively power." (From a 1950s Blachian Antique Jewelry (BAS) catalog.) Founded as early as 1742 by Franz Eligius Blachian in Traunstein, the gold and silversmith Blachian Antik-Schmuck is dedicated to works from the past. Mostly cast in silver, more rarely in gold, the company produced pieces of jewellery whose individual forms were taken from works of art of various epochs. In an old Blachian catalogue, for example, Romanesque and Gothic forms and those from the time of the migration of peoples can be found alongside Renaissance elements. The majority of Blachian's jewellery creations, however, are Baroque forms. The present set, consisting of necklace, ring and bracelet, probably made in the middle of the 20th century, shows large sculptural elements that beautifully illustrate the principle of the "swelling forms" described above. Seven large elements in the bracelet, mirrored in the centre show sculpted acanthus leaves with sweeping tips, which are found in simple form in the necklace and slightly modified in the ring. Grooved cuffs hold the links of the band and necklace together. The three-piece set found its way to us on Lake Constance and is a fine example of the jewellery produced by the Blachian manufactory in Traunstein, near Lake Chiemsee.
"In the change of the art epochs and in the diversity of the cultural circles, the goldsmith's and silversmith's art has given us unique works of beauty. In museums and private collections, these jewels still bear witness to the rich culture of bygone times. Blachian Antique Jewellery (BAS) conveys the beauty of these old masterpieces in true-to-the-original and true-to-the-work renditions, thus bringing noble joy. BAS is thus a mediator between the works of art of our ancestors and the people of the present day. BAS deepens and enriches the culture of the human soul." With these words, the gold and silversmiths Blachian-Antik-Schmuck, founded as early as 1742, described themselves in a 1950s sales catalogue.
