Splendid traditional costume jewellery

Old, 8-row choker necklace made of silver, Linz around 1930

After the abolition of the extremely rigorous dress codes, which since the Middle Ages had forbidden the rural population to wear colourful garments and metal jewellery, more and more colourful and varied forms of jewellery were able to develop from the end of the 18th century onwards. Particularly regionally, this was expressed in an abundance of traditional costumes, which have since determined the image of festively dressed people, especially in Upper Bavaria and Swabia, but also in other regions. For the women, this costume includes pile clasps and choker necklaces, bodice cords with pendants and sumptuously decorated lacing pins, ear and finger rings, bonnet pins and hair arrows. The men, on the other hand, wear finger rings, watch chains with a variety of pendants, and silver coin buttons. The present magnificent choker necklace belongs in this environment: the necklace made of silver consists of eight chain strands in the classic pea pattern. A large, magnificent clasp in Biedermeier style completes the piece of jewellery. The clasp is lightly gold-plated and features an applied filigree pattern on the front that is accentuated with red garnets and small wax pearls in the centre. The necklace was made in the Austrian city of Linz in the years around 1930. Comparable pieces can be found in the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim and in the present literature: Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (ed.): Schmuck zum Gwand, Pforzheim 2010, p. 33 f., and in Gislind Ritz: Alter bäuerlicher Schmuck, Munich 1978, p. 175.
