The pleasures of Portugal
Amethyst & natural pearls pendant from Portugal, around 1900
The floral shapes of this pendant wind into a grand design in splendid colours. In the centre of the pendant, two baguette-cut amethysts present a calm centre to the playful frame with their clear and austere shape and expressive colour. Numerous natural pearls and a large drop pearl (cultured pearl), together with diamonds in silver settings, set small highlights in the warmly glowing gold. A pin on the back allows the piece to be worn as a brooch as well. The pendant made of high-carat gold enchants at first sight and takes us back to a fashion that enjoyed great popularity throughout Europe in the years around 1900. The Art Nouveau style, which came from France, conquered the metropolises of the world and took the hearts of ladies by storm. A first-class piece of jewellery with summery beautiful colours, to be worn immediately as a pendant or brooch.
Natural pearls have always belonged in the art and wonder chambers of the rulers of Europe. The value of natural pearls compared to cultured pearls is obvious - just like natural gemstones, they are small natural wonders. The price of natural pearls in the years around 1900 was about the same as that of diamonds of the same size, and pearls for a necklace were usually purchased individually for reasons of cost and collected until a strand had been assembled. The magic that emanates from natural pearls can hardly be put into words, as each natural pearl is different from the next and has its own luster, structure and shine. They are always wonderful unique specimens of nature - which are hard to find today.
