Enamelled mourning medallion of gold with diamonds, around 1880
This sentimental pendant, a locket, is designed to keep the memory of a loved one alive. All of its details are designed with this purpose in mind, from its color and motif to its shape. We see on the front cover of the locket a cross of small diamond roses. Finely set in bright silver settings, it seems to float against the deep black enamel background. The colour of the enamel is of course meant to speak: it is the colour of mourning, which here wants to remind of a person who has gone to God. Well protected by the cross and religion, the person whose image we can find inside is probably waiting in heaven. The beautiful, well-preserved pendant was made in the 80s of the 19th century. At that time, the field of mourning jewelry was strictly limited to the color black.
