Elegance of the tsarist era
Graceful art nouveau brooch with spinel & diamond in gold, Moscow circa 1900
Russia on the threshold of the 20th century: Under the last tsar of the Romanov dynasty, Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra, the country - against all odds - once again experienced a cultural flowering. In St. Petersburg, the fabulously wealthy nobility partied in their palaces and Parisian fashion was all the rage when it came to ladies' wardrobes. Artists such as Tolstoy, Chekhov and Tchaikovsky created masterpieces that are still the epitome of the Russian soul. The present brooch also comes from this era, on the eve of the October Revolution. A flower and a sweeping leaf ornament are worked in gold with the typical Russian fineness of 56 zolotnik (equivalent to 583/000). A fiery red spinel and a small old-cut diamond adorn the design and give it a rich appearance. The asymmetrical floral composition betrays the influence of French Art Nouveau. The hallmarking reveals that the brooch was made around 1900 by the Moscow master jeweller Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin. Wonderfully preserved, here is a dreamlike piece of jewelry from tsarist Russia. A real testimony of the times, which shortly before its final end once again tells of the old splendor of Russia.
