From the heyday of the Empire

Graceful amethyst & natural pearl necklace from the England of the years around 1900

A graceful necklace from England: the stylised leaf and bow motifs wind richly into a symmetrical and airy composition. The centre of the filigree necklace features a beautiful delicate purple amethyst surrounded by small, pearl-adorned blossoms. Another amethyst in the shape of a drop gives the piece a graceful colourfulness. The object, made of warmly shining gold, was created in the years around 1900. At that time, jewellery in warmly shining yellow gold was in fashion, richly set with countless pearls. Especially necklaces and pendants were made in this technique, like this magnificent piece. Unlike in France and Germany, for example, where very similar forms can be found in the so-called "Garland Style", the cool colours of silver and platinum popular there were far less in demand in Great Britain: yellow gold remained popular on the island right into the Art Déco period. Thus the necklace with its delicate gold chain enchants at first sight and takes us back to the heyday of the British Empire. A first-class piece of jewellery with beautiful colours, a first-class gift, in excellent condition and ready to wear.

England, in the years around 1900: The Empire is at the height of its power. The old Queen Victoria has brought peace and economic success to her subjects. Luxury and wealth reach ever broader strata in London. The new style of Art Nouveau, or Style Liberty, as it is known in England, which originated in France, is eagerly adopted, as it reflects everything that is currently in fashion: lightness, elegance and a touch of cosmopolitanism.
