Rose red and bright white
Appealing vintage ring with ruby & diamonds in gold, around 1980
This ring is designed as a modern entourage ring in 750 yellow gold. Eight high quality diamonds in fine white (G colour) and very good clarity surround a natural red ruby in a dome setting in a carée set on top. A double set rail makes the arrangemet wearable as a ring. In the language of gemstones, the ruby represents love, while diamonds symbolize eternity, which is why this combination of gemstones is popular for engagement rings. Designs where a colored center stone is surrounded by white diamonds have long been known in jewelry history and they are called entourage rings, from French "entourage" for escort, entourage. Rings of this design, but mostly with round or oval ring faces were first in vogue in the years around 1900 - and since then it is impossible to imagine the world of jewellery without them. This unusual ring came to us here in Berlin, and its hallmarks reveal that it was made in Germany. We date the pretty ring to the years around 1985.
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Corundum can be found in almost all colors of the rainbow, even completely colorless stones are among them. But while all these stones can also be addressed as sapphires, only the magnificently red stones of this mineral genus are rubies. Rubies have extraordinary significance in the world of jewellery. In the 19th century, its brilliant color was often associated with love and passion: "Rubies are especially suitable for young lovers [...] In general, it is considered the emblem of the most passionate and ardent love, while the pearl is considered that of purity of soul." (Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung, November 1886).
