Antique demi-parure with turquoises & enamel in gold, Vienna circa 1875
The gold demi-parure, a set of earrings and matching brooch, was one of the essential components of a wealthy woman's jewelry wardrobe in the last third of the 19th century. Whatever social activity she chose to pursue during the day, such a set was always both fashionable and prestigious. Only in the evening was it exchanged for diamond jewellery. This set is completely in keeping with the fashion of the 1870s. Typical of the period are simple, often oval basic shapes for pendants, brooches and earrings, which then bear plastic applications. This creates an appealing contrast between flatness and plasticity, and their slight abstraction means that jewellery of this period is often surprisingly modern. Numerous pieces in this particular style can be found, for example, in the famous pattern book "Die Perle" by Martin Gerlach, from which we last illustrate a page from the 1872/3 edition. Here, leaf shapes have been applied to the oval basic shape of velvety matted gold, each bearing a small turquoise sabochon in the centre. The leaves are worked in two stages: First, a leaf of polished red gold has been applied, to which is then superimposed another leaf, shimmering matt yellow due to additional fine gilding, lined with fine dot engravings. Above this is a three-dimensional band of gold, accentuated with a black enamel stripe. The set bears hallmarks that clearly locate it to Vienna. It was made there after 1872, and we were able to discover it there. It is excellently preserved and still very wearable today.
