Königsberg cut

Antique necklace of faceted natural amber, Königsberg around 1930

This necklace from the 1930s is made up of 37 sought-after treasures, as it consists of just as many antique, natural amber stones. The necklace consists of amber stones cut into olive forms, which were assembled in the course to a chain. Each amber shows countless, finely cut facets, which bring the warm cognac tone of the natural material to shine in the best way. This cut is known as the "Königsberg Cut" and was a specialty of the State Amber Manufactory SBM, where the present necklace was probably made around 1935. Exhibits in the amber museum Ribnitz Dammgarten are comparable with our necklace. The material of this necklace is real amber, not pressed or synthetically produced amber. The beautiful necklace found its way to us here in Berlin and we had it rewound and added a magnetic clasp made of gold-plated silver, so it can be worn carefree. Compare the examples of amber of this cut in the literature: Die Staatliche Bernsteinmanufaktur Königsberg 1926-1945, ed. by Ulf Erichson, Ribnitz Damgarten 1998, p. 91.

Amber is one of the oldest materials of mankind. Even the hunters of the Stone Age adorned themselves with the primeval tree resin, which was washed up on the beaches of the North and Baltic Seas. Early on, the stone reached the Mediterranean region via branched trade routes, where it was prized by the Egyptians and Greeks. In ancient Rome, too, the upper classes developed an insatiable hunger for amber: in the first century AD, Emperor Nero sent an expedition to the far-flung Baltic to get their hands on the gold of the Baltic.
