Antique earrings with garnet coloured glass pastes & wax beads, around 1845
The large earrings presented here show in a typical manner the characteristics of Biedermeier jewellery. Created in the 1840s, the pendants present elegant curves and naturalistic floral ornaments in particularly sculptural forms of gold. The pair is executed in the "foam gold technique" typical of the period in the forms of the second rococo. Gold was expensive after the long Napoleonic Wars, but the demand for eye-catching jewellery was great, which stimulated the ingenuity of jewellery makers of those years: wafer-thin sheets of gold were beaten or pressed into voluminous shapes over steel models and the individual parts assembled by hand and filled with resin to stabilise them. The parts that were visible when worn were usually made of gold, while those on the back were often made of less expensive silver. This created pieces of jewelry that used as little expensive precious metal as possible while still looking impressively large. Pieces like these were part of various folk costumes, such as the Ochsenfurt Gautracht. Here now, a small flower made of a small wax gem and glass pastes in the color of garnets shimmers in the center of each gold frame, adding a colorful focal point to the design. Long ear hoops make the earrings easy to put on and a small ball is suspended in a movable way. The long ear hoops of the earrings have been renewed so that nothing stands in the way of comfortable wearing.
