On the pulse of time
Antique earrings with turquoises & diamonds in gold, around 1875
Fashion trends are not a new invention. As far back as the 19th century, fashion-conscious ladies read illustrated magazines to see what the coming season might bring - and jewellery was no exception. Multi-part gold earrings, for example, were among the biggest jewellery trends of the 1870s. This pair is in keeping with that fashion. However, it is much smaller in size and more discreetly designed than the very long examples worn just a few years earlier. The magazine "The Queen" declared earrings in this more discreet format to be among the "Latest Paris Fashions" of the autumn of 1875, as the last illustration shows - in particular, the lady at the bottom right is wearing a similar pair. Here, a showpiece in the form of a round, slightly domed and polished gold disc carries a bright cabochon-cut turquoise in each. Twelve diamond roses arranged in groups of three surround the central turquoise in each case. A golden pendulum is suspended movably below each earring, while a sculptural trefoil motif, as we often find in earrings of the 1870s, leads over to the hoop. Once on the pulse of the times and now a stylish anachronism, the earrings are still eminently wearable nearly a century and a half later. We discovered them in London, and they were probably once made in the UK - inspired by the Parisian fashions that the fashion clip from "The Queen" shows us so directly..,
