It's the collar

Antique stick brooch with sapphires, pearls & diamonds, around 1895

Brooches belonged until not so long ago to the indispensable pieces of jewelry. No lady would have left the house around 1950 without a brooch, because without a brooch the clothing was not complete. How and where the brooch was worn on the clothes changed according to the respective fashions. Since the end of the century the so-called "collar brooch" was popular, which was worn frontally in front of the neck at the height of the top button of high-necked blouses. The present example is such a collar brooch. The brooch is designed in the soft, curved shapes of the Belle Époque and features five sapphires as protagonists in addition to a set of fine old-cut diamonds and baroque natural pearls. The sapphires have that soft, pastel blue hue that is often associated with the place where they were found in Ceylon. In 1896, the ladies' journal Bazar wrote: "The jewels with Ceylon sapphires, which are very much favoured by fashion at the moment, are of truly enchanting splendour" (Der Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung, 42nd volume 1896, no. 26, p. 321). The front of the brooch is made of silver, in which the gemstones are particularly beautiful. The back, however, is made of reddish gold, so that it could not leave any discolouration even on white lace blouses. The beautiful piece of jewellery from the last years of the 19th century is very well preserved.
