Antique Art Deco cultured pearl necklace with sapphire & diamond clasp, around 1930
For a special evening you need special companions. The conversations should be interesting, the thoughts sparkling and every minute spent together precious. This necklace could be a stroke of luck. It combines precious materials with a special, interesting story. And it also adorns, shimmering and sparkling in the brilliance of pearls, a natural sapphire and fine diamonds. The Art Deco necklace combines three strands of warm white shimmering cultured pearls, knotted in the course, with a large platinum clasp. It sets a natural blue sapphire at its centre and frames it in graphically designed shapes, additionally set with around one carat of white diamonds. The sumptuous features of the large clasp indicate it: When this necklace was created, it was a special luxury to wear pearls like these. Today, after cheap cultured pearls from China have flooded the market, this may come as a surprise. However, the beautifully selected early cultured pearls from Japan presented here were a rare, sought-after treasure at the time the necklace was created. For it was only shortly before that Kokichi Mikimoto (御木本 幸吉, * March 10, 1858, † September 21, 1954) had become the first person ever to succeed in growing full-round cultured pearls in marine shells, which were now indistinguishable from the precious natural pearls. The necklace thus celebrates this new invention and the beauty of the materials. In this way, it is entirely in keeping with the spirit of its era, which revered modernity, electricity, speed and inventiveness. Flickering cinema screens, electrically lit boulevards, grand receptions in metropolises: At any social occasion of the time, the necklace here would have been the appropriate companion. The elegant piece of jewellery has been preserved in its original case by a London jeweller, and it was from London that it found its way to us. An independent appraisal has confirmed the quality of the materials. It is delivered together with the necklace.
