Anger and pride in the eyes

Antique pendant of a suffragette with amethyst, peridot & pearls in gold / around 1910

Today, the equality of men and women before the state is an undisputed feature of Western cultures and it is impossible to imagine our society without it. And yet it did not fall from the sky - rather, the path to it was an uphill struggle. A lot of blood and tears were shed before women were allowed to participate in political elections for the first time in Germany in 1919. This social change was made possible because strong women joined forces and took organized action against prevailing injustice. Central figures in the struggle for equal rights were the so-called suffragettes (from English/French suffrage, "choice"), radical women's rights activists in Great Britain and the United States who primarily engaged in passive resistance against male domination, including disruptions of official events and public hunger strikes. The suffragette movement was carried primarily by middle-class women. Jewelry set with gemstones in the emblematic colors of green, white, and purple became established as their identifying mark and symbol. In the case of this pendant, there is a green peridot, white pearls and a purple amethyst. The colors of this setting can be read as an acronym: From the first letters of the colors green (green), white (white), violet (violet) a sentence can be formed that bundles everything the suffragettes fought for: "Give Women Vote" - "Give women the right to vote". This piece of jewellery is thus a first-class example of suffragette jewellery from the years around 1910. This pendant is therefore not only a beautiful and decorative piece of jewellery in first-class materials, but also a document of its time, whose first wearer probably stood up for a better world in her time, full of pride and anger in her eyes, adorned with the colours of the suffragettes. A newly added gold chain makes the pendant immediately wearable!
