Lustre and Laurels
Antique pendant with blister pearl & diamonds, Vienna circa 1890
The curved shapes of Art Nouveau, inspired by nature, were a fashion of the artists, the bohemians of the turn of the century. Those who wore eye-catching Art Nouveau creations liked it rather avant-garde and risqué. In aristocratic circles and among the wealthy bourgeoisie of the time, more classical forms were preferred instead. They took their cue from the equally playful and gallant formal vocabulary of the time of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Laurel wreaths, garlands and even bow motifs adorned the high-quality diamond jewelry for the evening. A pendant that pays homage to this classic style is presented here. It centers as a showpiece a large blister pearl with a fine bluish-silver luster. The pearl swings freely within a frame set with diamond roses and topped by a movable bow. On the sides, two laurel garlands frame the design. The entire surface of the jewelry is covered with silver, while on the back it is made of reddish gold. This technique was quite common in the 19th century to set diamonds. According to its hallmark, the beautiful pendant was made in Vienna between 1872 and 1922. Its design and its making allow us to narrow it down a bit more precisely in time, to the period around 1890. A very similar, little later design can be found, for example, in David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, p. 245.
