A hunter from Kurpfalz

Antique pendant with deer bones in gilded silver, around 1930

"A hunter from Kurpfalz, He rides through the green forest, He shoots the game along, Just as he pleases." This well-known folk song describes the joys of the hunt, which in earlier times was a noble privilege. Hunting trophies are among the oldest ornaments of mankind. Even today they adorn the proud huntsman or his wife. Particularly popular are the rudimentary canine teeth of the red deer, known as grandeln. This pendant holds a pair of the coveted trophies and is made of gold-plated silver. A classic oak leaf motif frames the grandeln and visually takes us to the native forest where the deer live, whose trophies adorn the centre of this work created around 1930.
