Antique bangle with old cut diamonds in gold & silver, England circa 1900
La Belle Époque, the "beautiful epoch" from around 1890-1910, was a time of prosperity and carefreeness for the upper middle classes of Central Europe. There had not been any threatening wars in the immediate vicinity for some time; industrialization had raised the standard of living as well as the wealth of the industrialists. Consequently, there was a great demand for precious jewellery for the day as well as the evening. For the first time, even very precious jewellery was no longer made to order, but could be ordered from catalogues. Numerous catalogues of that time still help today to date jewellery accurately. The present bangle is a typical design of the kind that could be purchased from high-end jewelry catalogs around 1900: Indeed, an 1899 Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. catalogue depicts an almost identical bangle, differing from our example only in the type of settings and the number of diamonds to the sides (see last illustration, lower right). Forged from reddish gold, the hoop is slender and elegant, as was fashionable at the time. About 1.49 ct of old-cut diamonds form a flower in the center and sparkling stripes on the sides. The settings are crafted from silver so that the color of the diamonds is not dulled. We were able to purchase the bangle in London. Its design suggests that it was also created in Britain. It was once a festive accessory that, worn on a long white glove, could accompany the Victorian lady to dinner or a ball.
