Diamonds and Pearls

Antique bangle with diamond & pearls in gold, around 1895

In the 19th century, bangles were among the indispensable pieces of jewellery of a well-off lady - often several of them were worn. They have always been the jewellery of the higher classes, because the arm jewellery hindered physical or even everyday work, if it did not run the risk of being damaged. Thus arm ornaments are completely absent in the area of peasant costume jewellery. With diamonds, pearls and gold, three precious and at the same time three of the most classic materials in the history of western jewellery have come together here to form a bracelet. At the centre of the design is a large old-cut diamond held in place by delicate lobes. Wrapping around the solitaire are bands of seed beads that set off geometric motifs. To the left and right of the foam motif, the hoop breaks up into three narrow lines, so-called knife-edge lines, which are particularly characteristic of late 19th century jewellery. A link bracelet with a very similar motif as a showpiece is advertised as "Neuer Juwelenschmuck aus Hanauer Kunstwerkstätten" in an issue of the ladies' journal Der Bazar from September 1895 (cf. last illustration). We were able to acquire the bangle in Great Britain, but it may also have been made in Germany.
