Antique bangle with diamonds in gold, Paris circa 1895
The bangle belonged to the jewellery of a wealthy woman in the late 19th century. Interestingly, bangles are virtually unknown from traditional costume jewellery. This is possibly due to the fact that this type of jewellery in particular is susceptible to bumping into corners and edges and suffering damage during manual work - and unlike the wedding ring, it serves no particular purpose other than to adorn. In bourgeois and aristocratic circles, on the other hand, it was even common for a lady to wear more than one bangle at a time for prestigious purposes. In fashion magazines of the late 19th century, for example, we see festively dressed ladies wearing two or three gold hoops next to each other on their white gloves to go with their ball gowns. The present bangle was made in Paris at the end of the 19th century. It is crafted as a slender yet solid ring of rose gold and features an asymmetrical flower or leaf motif as its showpiece. The curved lines are close to the just beginning Art Nouveau style and are richly set with shimmering rose-cut diamonds. Another large old-cut diamond of over half a carat forms the centre of the vegetal design. The diamonds are set in particularly high-carat gold, as only gold alloys from 750/000 upwards were used for export, namely 840/000 and 920/000. Hidden hallmarks on the clasp indicate that the bangle was made in Paris for export - for even then the city was considered a fashion capital, and exports from Paris were considered dernier cri throughout the Western world. We were able to discover it in Hamburg.
