On waste and woodland...
Antique daisy ring with 2.38 ct diamonds in platinum, around 1930
"On waste and woodland, rock and plain, Its humble buds unheeded rise; The rose has but a summer reign; The Daisy never dies!" (James Montgomery: A Field Flower, 1803) In the language of flowers, still quite ubiquitous in the 19th century, the daisy occupied a special place. For not only was the little flower equated with innocence, but since it could bloom all year round, it was appreciated for symbolising constancy. The Scottish poet James Montgomery, for example, wrote the above verses after finding a daisy in full bloom on a hike on Christmas Day in 1803. This ring is a so-called "daisy ring". It is set with a total of 2.38 carats of diamonds in old and transitional cuts, the forerunners of the modern brilliant cut. The entire ring is forged from platinum, so that the diamonds shine particularly brightly. The center stone alone weighs about 0.90ct and is of fine white "Top Wesselton" color with only small inclusions. Eight smaller diamonds line up like petals around the magnificent large old-cut diamond. The fine grained platinum settings make the ring look as if the ring head is made entirely of diamond. At the same time, the ring face remains pleasantly flat so that it cannot get caught anywhere. This makes the piece of jewellery an ideal companion for every day and also ideal as an engagement ring. We discovered the ring in Vienna.
