In the garden of generations

German Art Deco expressive "vegetable ring", c. 1928

The 1920s brought a new style to the world of jewellery with Art Deco: geometric abstractions, fine materials and luxurious fittings were sought after and supplied by goldsmiths in Vienna, London and Paris as well as by their colleagues in Berlin and overseas. In the years that followed, the style continued to evolve. The original fascination with clear geometries was now mixed with a new enthusiasm for bizarre, natural, irregular and surprising designs. The ring presented here, made of very light yellow gold, is in its detailed forms virtually prototypical of this period, or more precisely: the second half of the 1920s in Germany. Geometry and a love of bizarre, abstracted natural forms mingle to create designs that we find in jewelry as well as in contemporary architecture and fashion. Compare, for example, the grilles and decorative paintings of the Renaissance Theater in Berlin, rebuilt 1926-1928, or the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, 1926/27. In the centre of the oval ring head is a fine arrangement of tendrils and foliage. Two blossoms are formed, each holding a table-cut diamond. This setting is second-hand here, presumably diamonds that were already cut in the 18th century and have been re-set here. They are surrounded by detailed forged leaf shapes and small floral tendrils, so that they themselves appear almost like shimmering fruit sands of blossoms. This piece of jewellery, undoubtedly from the hand of an experienced master goldsmith, is excellently preserved. A highly decorative piece of jewellery and testimony to human imagination and creative will.
