The Adamas

Antique gold ring with old cut solitaire, around 1890

"With the highest honors is he endowed, the Adamas, the unbreakable hard diamond, whose fire and brilliance seem incomparable, whose clearness that of water, and whose durability almost unlimited." With these exuberant words, a popular non-fiction book of the first half of the 20th century describes the king of gemstones. Diamonds have been popular throughout the ages, but it was not until the discovery of new, rich deposits in South Africa in 1867 that a veritable boom in the hardest of all earthly minerals took place. From the years around 1890, engagement rings with diamond solitaires came into fashion - and have remained so to this day. This diamond ring also dates from this time - the last decade of the 19th century. In its center, it presents a brilliant-cut diamond in the historic old cut, the so-called "Old Europan Cut". The diamond weighs approximately 0.20 ct and is held securely in place by a fine chaton that appears to be a flower. The setting and band are made of warm shining yellow gold. The ring is beautifully preserved and is a stylish eye-catcher for any occasion.
