A Harlequin

Antique gold ring with black opal & old European cut diamonds, around 1900

Opals are without question among the harlequins of the gemstone world. Their color spectrum within the individual stones is unsurpassed - and with a good opal it is not uncommon that almost all colours of the rainbow are united and flash out depending on the incidence of light. Such effects are also seen in this full opal, a so-called black opal from the legendary mines of Australia, which is the main protagonist here. Black opals were first mined at Lightning Ridge in the early 20th century. We had the opal set into the ring, which came to us without a centerpiece. The turn-of-the-century gem features a shuttle shape so favoured during the Belle Époque, which has lost none of its beauty to this day. Centrally, we see the magnificent Australian full opal in an oval cabochon cut in a bed of eighteen old European cut diamonds. The opal with a dark base refracts the incident light in the colours of the rainbow with strong proportions of blue and green, and the quality diamond set shimmers and sparkles with it. The ring is crafted of high karat yellow gold and finely executed, to which the delicate gallery beneath the diamonds bears eloquent witness. It is sturdy and its ring band strong without losing elegance.

A dreamlike stone, the opal, whose special brilliance was already praised in the highest tones by the ancient author Pliny at the beginning of the era: "the gentler fire of the carbuncle shows itself on them; the shining purple of the amethyst shows itself; the sea green of the emerald shows itself and all these colours shine at the same time in an unbelievable mixture". As a gemstone of love and hope, but also as a symbol of dazzling love, the following centuries have also revered it.
