Antique medallion pendant with diamonds, enamel & pearls in gold, circa 1870
Rich and golden, the pendant here shimmers, resplendent, yet also warming and comforting at the same time. It is designed as a round shield with a sparkling star of diamonds set in the center of a frame of shimmering pearls. A large diamond in the old brilliant cut, known as the Old Mine Cut, occupies the center of the design. Smaller rose-cut diamonds form the rays of the star. On the outside, a narrow frame of dark blue enamel completes the design - it forms the firmament against which the star gently shines. Round jewels in the shape of domed shields were a big fashion in the 1860s and 1870s. After the more naturalistic designs of the first half of the century, the forms now became more abstract. People loved large, shimmering surfaces of warmly shining gold, which shone particularly richly thanks to an additional layer of fine gold - the so-called "bloom finish". This pendant is from this period and combines yellow gold with dark blue enamel, diamonds and shimmering natural pearls. The back of the pendant is also typical of the period, as it conceals a medallion compartment in which personal mementos can be stored - memories of a person above whom the sparkling star keeps the memory alive.
