Antique Art Deco Navette Ring with Diamonds in White Gold & Platinum, c. 1930

There are many ways to effectively stage a beautiful, large brilliant-cut diamond. One of them is the solitaire ring, which makes the diamond the sole motif and focal point. Another possibility is the entourage ring, which frames the center stone amidst a wreath of smaller gemstones. A particularly beautiful variation comes from the world of Art Deco forms: the navette ring, which stages the diamond amid finely sawn arabesques and mille grains. The present ring bears fine witness to this. The large old-cut diamond of about 0.63 ct is set in the centre in a narrow frame, which makes it appear even larger. Fine ornaments, peppered with small diamond roses, unfold all around. The result is a light, delicate design that is reminiscent of lace, not least because of its scalloped edge. The two-part ring shoulder provides a subtle contrast with its strong and clear design. The ring is made of white gold, a precious metal that was quite new at the time it was created. A fine layer of platinum is applied to the front, which makes the precious metal shine even brighter - a technique no longer used today, which, like the diamond cuts and the design, suggest that it was created around 1930. The piece of jewellery thus does without any colour contrasts and relies solely on the brilliance of the diamonds and the fine structures of the ring face.
