Colourful Biedermeier

Antique ring with 1,45 ct diamonds in enamelled gold, around 1850

The jewellery of the Biedermeier period is anything but staid - in fact, the great variety of colours and shapes that characterise the jewellery of the period is surprising. In the portraits of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), for example, who is known for his lifelike depictions of the portrayed person's jewellery, we are confronted with textured gold, colourful enamel and gleaming gemstones. The present ring is a fine example of high quality jewelry of the period. Nine individually cut diamonds in the cushion-shaped old cut, the so-called Old Mine Cut, weigh together about 1.45 ct and have been set à jour and arranged into a precious bloom. The design is typical of that time - it has left behind the plastic gold settings of the decades before and presents itself as a flat, yet slightly ornamental gold band with curved edges and decorative openings. Also typical of the period is the enamel decoration in rich blue, especially in combination with diamonds, which makes it appear even brighter and more sparkling in contrast. The literature contains numerous examples of similar enamelled diamond jewellery in yellow gold (cf. for example David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, p.125). In a time when jewellery was often made to order, such a ring represented a luxury reserved only for the wealthiest classes. Over the years it has survived very well - and is a rare example of diamond jewellery of the time, as often the diamonds were later removed and set in more modern jewellery. We discovered the ring in Hamburg.
