In the distant past

Antique ring with old cut solitaire in red gold, around 1890

In the late 19th century, industrialization was already well advanced. The once quiet cities had become modern metropolises - and contemporaries dreamed of a distant and romantic past. Buildings, works of art and ornaments were created with references to the Renaissance, to the Baroque, but even to the so distant Gothic of the Middle Ages. The Prussian goldsmiths Jules and Luis Wièse, for example, who worked in Paris, created magnificent designs that reinterpreted Gothic motifs in the last third of the 19th century. The present ring in pink gold is also inspired by Gothic rings, which often feature intertwined vegetal decorations on the narrow gold band of the hoop. Quite contemporary, however, is the diamond at its centre: For this is shaped in an approximately round old cut, which was only developed at the time the ring was made. The ring's prong setting, too, is in every respect of its time: It was the invention of the old-cut diamond that made it necessary and useful in the first place, as it allows a particularly large amount of light to reach the bright gemstone, thus igniting its brilliance and fire. The ring is in very good condition. A beautiful variation on the classic solitaire ring, which interprets it according to the spirit of the past infatuated with historicism. Today, even this time is far away, and we sometimes look at the jewellery of historicism with the nostalgia that people of the 19th century felt for the Middle Ages.
