Rococo Revival

Antique ring with diamonds in silver & red gold, around 1925

In Art Deco, we can occasionally observe a trend that, at first glance, may not seem to fit at all with the graphic, cool forms of the time: a revival of Baroque and Rococo motifs. In France, for example, George Barbier created an entire cycle of illustrations for the then-scandalous epistolary novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses of 1782; in Germany, Paul Scheurich modeled gallant rococo ladies and courtiers for the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Obviously, people of that time felt connected to the Rococo, with its sensual pleasure and lust for luxury, which in a way also characterized the turbulent 1920s. The present ring is another example of this. It was created in the 1920s and yet pays tribute to the style of the late 18th century. It has a central dark blue glass cabochon, reminiscent of the so-called "Bague au Firmament" rings worn by Marie Antoinette. A silver bouquet is applied to the cabochon, a so-called Giardinetto motif, which was also popular in the Rococo period. In the center of the bouquet is an old-cut diamond, as it was still cut in the 1920s. The four outer diamonds, however, are much older - they are shaped in the Peruzzi cut, as it was common in the 18th century. Arguably, these diamonds come from an old heirloom and, because of their age, enrich the ring's historical references in a particularly fitting way. The ring is beautifully preserved. More recently, it appears to have received a new ring band, forged from high karat rose gold. So it can now be worn again without any worries.
