Antique ring with diamonds & sapphires in white gold & platinum, circa 1925
There are many ways to effectively stage a diamond. One of them is the solitaire ring, which makes the diamond the sole motif and focal point. Another possibility is the entourage ring, which frames the center stone amidst a wreath of smaller gemstones. This ring presents us with a particularly unusual and individual variation, and it comes from the world of forms of Art Deco. The central old-cut diamond of about a quarter of a carat is initially set in an illusion setting that surrounds it with flower-like pinched platinum, making it appear even larger. Aiming for the same effect is the surrounding shadow gap, which in turn is surrounded by a wreath of calibrated-cut sapphires in contrasting blue. On the outside, rose-cut diamonds are staggered by size to give the ring head an elongated, oval shape. In addition to the diamond cuts, the metal combination of the ring also allows for a more accurate dating, as it is crafted of white gold with a fine overlay of platinum on the ring head. White gold was patented in Germany in the 1910s, but due to the war it did not find widespread use until the Art Deco years. However, as the early white gold alloys had a delicate yellow tinge, a layer of platinum was often placed on top of jewellery. Later pieces of jewellery do without the additional platinum - this ring was therefore probably created in the early 1920s. An unusual, beautifully preserved ring from a time that produced particularly original jewels.
