Antique ring with glass pastes & pearls in gold, Great Britain circa 1815
This ring takes us to the England of the years around 1815, the era of the so-called "Regency", when the Prince of Wales George August Frederick of Hanover took over the reins of government for his father George III, who was ill with porphyria. It was a time of particular romanticism and sensibility, so aptly portrayed especially by Jane Austen's novels. During this period, the English upper classes favored the life portrayed in many later films on their extensive country estates. The day was devoted to amusements and outdoor sporting activities, while elegant salons dominated social life in the evening. The distinction between day and evening jewellery, with which the English lady took these different requirements into account, also dates from this period. Rings in particular were worn in a wide variety of forms and often in large numbers at the same time, as contemporary paintings show. During the day the jewellery shone in rich colours and warm yellow gold. Towards evening, the lady then switched to diamond jewellery, which was usually set in silver. The ring was intended for day time wear. For in settings of yellow gold, warmly shimmering pearls as well as two glass pastes in the color of citrines or topazes can be admired here. Glass pastes, i.e. faceted, coloured glass, were a very common material at this time when it came to achieving intense colour. The ring is beautifully preserved and a rare example of such English jewellery of the years around 1815.
