Antique ring with red spinels & diamonds, Birmingham 1905
The year 1905: In the USA, Theodore Roosevelt was once again sworn in as president. The legendary Cullinan diamond is found in a mine in South Africa. Rainer Maria Rilke published his poetry cycle The Book of Hours. Gustav Mahler conducted the world premiere of his Kindertotenlieder. A celebrated dancer appeared for the first time under the now legendary name of Mata Hari. This ring was also created in this eventful year. Such a golden band ring, in which coloured stones and diamonds were set alternately and flatly next to each other, is probably to be called the typical British piece of jewellery of the years around 1900: Whether set with sapphires, rubies, emeralds or opals, at least one such ring belonged in the well-stocked jewelry box. Here it is red spinels combined with diamonds. The intense color of the spinel made people confuse it with the ruby until the 18th century. In fact, the Black Prince's Ruby in the British Imperial State Crown, for example, is a ruby red spinel! The ring is very well preserved. It was created in Birmingham, we found it in London, and now it is waiting for us in Berlin - where will it go next?
