Antique ring with sapphires & diamonds in platinum & rose gold, Paris circa 1900
Toi-et-moi, you and me - this French term is used to describe rings that make two precious stones equal protagonists of the design. Even Napoleon adored Joséphine such a ring with juxtaposed diamond and sapphire, but it was precisely at the turn of the century that this type of ring achieved the greatest popularity. The present ring is an unusual representative of the type, since instead of two gemstones it shows two cloverleaf motifs, each composed of three gemstones: One of old-cut diamonds, the other of sapphires in a mild shade of blue. The play with romantic symbols appears to be further enriched by the choice of stones, for in the cultural discourse of the 19th century, people liked to ascribe meanings to precious stones. The diamond, for example, was considered a symbol of eternity because of its hardness; the sapphire stood for sincerity and fidelity. When George Kunz, mineralogist and vice-president of Tiffany's, compiled all sorts of myths and anecdotes about precious stones in the early 20th century, he noted about the blue sapphire: "The sapphire - the gemstone of autumn, of the blue autumn sky - is a symbol of truth, sincerity and constancy (...) It stands for unexcited, tried and tested affection" (Kunz, The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, 1913, p. 324). Typical of the period, the ring sets the diamonds in platinum, the sapphires in gold, while the ring band itself is made of reddish gold. According to its hallmark, it was made in Paris, where we also discovered it. It is in very good condition and is suitable for daily wear.
