Antique Gold Sapphire & Diamond Ring, Birmingham 1910
The mystical beauty of exotic gemstones plays an extraordinary role in the motifs of jewellery. Due to Europe's good trade relations with the rest of the world, the availability of foreign gemstones at the turn of the 20th century was greater than ever before. Diamonds were mined in new deposits in South Africa in previously unseen quality. And coloured stones reached Europe from the Indian subcontinent and South America. The ring here shows the wealth of the era before the First World War. Set in high karat gold, it features eight diamonds and four sapphires. The stones create a charming pattern of blue and white, harmoniously complemented by the warm luster of the gold. The choice of stones was also based on symbolic considerations, as this allowed a subtle yet visible message to be conveyed. Our ring speaks of fidelity and permanence, symbolized by blue sapphire and white diamond. The goldsmith's work is flat so that the ring wears comfortably. The hallmark in the ring band reveals that it was presented to the Assay Office in Birmingham in 1910. The ring is in very good condition.
