A piece of eternity

Antique solitaire ring with old cut diamond in gold & silver, Vienna circa 1890

Hardly any piece of jewellery has the special meaning and deep symbolism of a diamond ring. As the hardest mineral on earth, the diamond has been associated with eternity for centuries as a sign of everlasting love and connection. As early as 1477, it is said, Duchess Mary of Burgundy received a diamond ring as a promise of fidelity from her future husband Maximilian of Habsburg. The old European cut diamond in this ring weighs about 0.50 ct and is set in silver. It sparkles in a bezel setting, which wonderfully emphasizes the size of the stone with its light material color. Three additional, smaller old-cut diamonds each to the left and right complete the design and, when viewed from above, make the ring appear as a sparkling band. A yellow gold ring shank - fine and yet solid - completes the design. The ring was made in Vienna in the 1890s, as the hallmarks reveal. A fine engagement or stacking ring with over 100 years of history.

Another interesting chapter on the importance of the diamond can still be followed today in the art city of Florence. Here Piero de' Medici chose the diamond ring as his personal emblem, as his imprese. The son of Cosimo and father of Lorenzo il Magnifico had this ring, adorned with a single diamond and a banner with the inscription "SEMPER", meaning "always", placed on all the buildings for which he was responsible, but also on everyday objects. Families linked to the Medici, such as the Rucellai, adopted this sign: We still see it today on the façade of their city palazzo.
