Three "yeses!"

Antique trilogy ring with old cut diamonds in platinum & white gold, around 1920

The ring here presents three sparkling diamonds in the old brilliant cut. The stones of about 0.35 ct together are placed in a diagonal row across the finger. The ring band, set with six more rose-cut diamonds, encloses the three center stones in symmetrical sweeps on either side. The ring is made of gold with a platinum face. The combination of the brightly shining diamonds with the noble lustre of the white metal creates a harmonious composition and a successful play of colours. The design of the ring, with its beautiful curve, is still entirely indebted to the Art Nouveau style. The white colouring, on the other hand, already hints at the coming Art Deco. Rings with three gemstones have a very special meaning in the history of jewellery: these pieces of jewellery are called "trilogy rings" and they are charged with content. Thus, the trinity of gemstones in these pieces stands for a shared temporality that unites past, present and shared future in one piece. The diamonds, which according to legend are indestructible and thus eternally enduring gemstones, stand for the infinity of the relationship. Due to its shape, but also its meaning in terms of content, the ring can be a perfect engagement ring or a love gift. In addition, the stones are set in such a way that the ring can still be worn daily and without restriction even after more than 100 years.

The symbolic act of giving a diamond ring as an engagement gift is first documented in 1477 and can be traced back to Mary of Burgundy, who received a diamond ring as a promise of fidelity from her future husband, Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. Wearing a ring as a sign of commitment on the third finger of the left hand, on the other hand, was already the custom of the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the "love vein" connected the heart to the left ring finger.
