Through the ages
Antique trilogy ring with sapphire & diamonds, Germany circa 1930
This ring belongs to one of the most popular ring types in jewelry history: Three stones, set horizontally to the finger, in a plain gold ring band. Diamonds have always been involved, sometimes as protagonists, but often also framing a coloured centre stone - as here, where two old-cut diamonds accompany a natural blue sapphire. In the three stones of such a ring, the temporality of a relationship is to be made visible: The past, present and future lived together. The ring also picks up on the most popular jewel combination of those years, that of sapphire and diamond. This combination had a romantic meaning, because the blue sapphire was seen as a sign of fidelity, the diamond as a guarantee of eternity and permanence. This results in a harmony not only of the design, but also in the meaning of the ring. As was customary in those years, the ring band is made of gold, but the settings of the gemstones are forged of white gold, which intensifies the cool contrast of white and blue and does not tint the gemstones. The ring came to us here in Berlin, where it may also have been created.
