Antique Art Deco white gold ring with old european cut solitaire, USA circa 1925
Whether New York, Paris or Berlin - in all metropolises in the 1920s, people loved the equally strict and elegant design language of Art Deco. But each place also developed its own variations on this modern style. While European and especially German rings of the 1920s tended towards flat, elongated designs, US rings of the time are characterized above all by their towering, yet filigree openwork designs. Here is a typical American ring of the period. It sets a sparkling old european cut diamond of about 0.65 ct as a solitaire. Set high above the finger, the diamond gets plenty of light and can perfectly present its wonderful fire. In the side view, delicate ornaments can be seen in a break-through design, reminiscent of fine lace. All of this is executed in white gold, a typically American material of those years: for under David Belais, who founded the jewelry company of the same name in 1863, people experimented for many years with gold alloys that would combine the white color of platinum with the advantages of gold. When Belais registered his patent in 1918, he was already ahead of the German Karl Richter from Pforzheim, who had registered his own, somewhat different patent for white gold in 1913. Due to the World War, however, Richter's invention was hardly used for the time being, and so it was ultimately the name Belais, at least in the USA, that became synonymous with high-carat white gold, while European goldsmiths more frequently resorted to platinum or combinations of white gold and platinum.
